Michigan Students to Attend College for ‘Free’ Education fund

StudentLoanPhotoThe latest, greatest idea for making a college education affordable sounds simple enough — students can attend school for free.

But there’s a catch.

In return for free tuition, students have to agree to pay a fixed percentage of their future income for a specified number of years to a special fund that would pay other students’ college bills.

A version of the pay-it-forward tuition plan was introduced recently in the Michigan Legislature and is awaiting action. More than 20 states are looking at some version of the plan, although most are simply looking at studying it, while the Michigan bill would set up a pilot program.

Deadline Is Approaching for $12,000 Education Grants

prestigious scholarship deadlineThe Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund (MMMF) is a $12,000 grant award for women applicants of developing countries to pursue higher education in the USA and Canada. The MMMF also typically invites the recipients to Washington DC to participate in a three day Awards Program organized in their honor.

Applicants must be enrolled (in residence) at an accredited US or Canadian educational institution for the academic year 2013-14 and intend to be enrolled for the 2014-15 academic year.

An MMMF grant covers a portion of the total costs for an academic year. Grant application deadline is January 15, 2014.

GreenProjectMatchMaking-GrantsForty teams of graduate and undergraduate students from across the country are each receiving a $15,000 government grant for research proposals that develop solutions to real-world water and environmental challenges. The government grant funding, provided through the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) People, Prosperity and the Planet (P3) Phase I grants, was recently announced by the Agency.

“The P3 program offers a unique opportunity for students to develop and showcase innovative designs for environmental solutions,” said Lek Kadeli, principal deputy assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Research and Development. “As we enter the 10th year of the government grant program, the ingenuity and passion of the students continue to provide solutions that protect health and the environment while spurring economic development.”

Group Fails to Read Grant Instructions - May Lose Grants FundingThe West Virginia University Student Government Association tabled a vote for a grant request at its Wednesday meeting after a miscommunication.

The Indian Student Association applied for a SGA grant, it but failed to attend Wednesday’s meeting. According to the Student Body constitution, approved during February’s election, members of the organizations must be present at the meeting before grants can be approved.

SGA will vote on the grant request when the two groups meet.
